Infrastructure

Stakeholder engagement is at the core of Jindal Africa’s sustainable development programmes and informs how, where and when it involves relevant stakeholders in its operations and development plans.

Economic development is but one of the focus areas for Jindal Africa as it expands its footprint and operations. To this end, the company has participated in a number of enterprise development activities, including participating in the Mkhondo Municipality’s Local Economic Development forum. This body serves to drive the local economy in and around Piet Retief, nearby the Kiepersol Colliery,

One of the initiatives undertaken in the same area was to provide a reliable electricity supply to a sewing project initiated by Inkosi Mthethwa, the traditional leader of the Madabukela community. This project has grown over the years to support some of the local community through the sale of its output.

Grading of Roads

Kiepersol colliery is committed to continue with developing communities within their area of operation. Gravel and dirt roads are an essential means of access for our employees and the community at large. Therefore, due to consistent rainfalls the roads requires a fair amount of maintenance before and after the raining season. Essentially, grading the roads improves the movement of goods and services in the area resulting in economic growth. Eighteen communities within a radius of 40km benefit from this CSR project. A grader is circulated to different communities on a scheduled basis restoring and maintaining conditions of the roads and sports field.

The Construction of Bus Shelters

Rural infrastructure is key to improving the overall quality of life in communities we operate. The construction of bus shelters forms part of the Social & Labour Plan project, with a basic purpose to safeguard learners, employees and the rest of the community members waiting for transport. In partnership with the local municipality, +10 Bus shelters were handed over to the respective communities for safety & proper maintenance to date.
